The age limit for the use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation remains controversial. The aim of our study was to evaluate the outcomes of the elderly patients who needed ECMO treatment following cardiac surgery in our institution. METHODS Single center retrospective study. 69 consecutive adult patients (22 pts ≥ 70 years and 47 pts < 70 years) treated with ECMO for cardiac failure following surgery. January December 2014. Indications for ECMO: inability to wean from cardiopulmonary bypass or postoperative cardiac failure refractory to medical treatment. Short-term and long-term outcomes were assessed. RESULTS Demographic data and comorbidities Surgery performed ECMO duration: elderly vs younger pts ECMO type Survival after discharge (patients treated with ECMO), by age group (Kaplan-Meier Survival Estimates) Relationship of ECMO duration and long term survival (Kaplan-Meier Survival Estimates) Outcomes of patients treated with ECMO for postcardiotomy heart failure in VUHSK CONCLUSIONS ECMO can be effectively used in the elderly postcardiotomy patients with acceptable in-hospital mortality Long-term outcomes of the elderly patients treated with ECMO for postcardiotomy failure are similar to the younger patients group.
