Election of 1860: Lincoln won (Republicans wanted to end slavery in the territories) First states to leave: SC, GA, FL, AL, MS, LA, TX Created Confederate States of America, led by president Jefferson Davis Ft. Sumter, a federal fort in SC, attacked by the South Lincoln called for a blockade of the South and a volunteer army Second group of states to leave: AR, VA, NC, TN

Antietam: bloodiest one-day battle; won by USA Gettysburg: 3 day battle; bloodiest of war; turning point in the north b/c it was the last battle in the North Vicksburg: 6 week battle; USA won control of Mississippi River; turning point in the south b/c it split the CSA in half
