It’s on the back of the Dimensions of Honors Learning.
Ask students to take out the cardstock that has the Dimensions of Honors Learning on the front and the Honors Learning Experiences on the back. This is what we’ll reviewing today and should be used to take notes.

3 of the 6 Honors Learning Experiences
Today we’re going to cover 3 of the 6 Honors Learning Experiences. We’ll review the other three on other days.
Honors Program staff are often asked: Will being in the Honors Program make me more marketable?
The answer…not necessarily. “Doing” the Honors Program will provide experiences and skills you can talk about that will give you an edge.
We want you to know your options so you can fully take advantage of what’s possible. If you know what’s available, you can be active in your choices and can best leverage your Honors experiences.

The information covered today will be part of the “Navigating Honors” Assessment, which will be a quiz on Reggie Net. The assessment will be completed in class during Week 12, week of November 6.
Be sure to take notes, as you’ll be able to use them while completing the quiz. “Student Notification” on your chart refers to how you learn about these opportunities.

There are 6 types of Honors Learning Experiences.
Look at these icons. What do you see? Responses you’re looking for: all are red, same size, similar.
Even though they look the same, they are all unique and offer different experiences
We encourage you to pursue a variety, though it is not required.
We’ll look at these in some depth. Please keep in mind that things change and that while I refer to a contact person, the best resource is always the Honors Program website. These are people to be in touch with, but the website should be your first stop.

6. Honors Seminars Honors Mindset Seminar
Credit generating; 1 credit hour
Learning-focused and scholarly
Honors Seminars are taken for credit. These courses result in a grade that affects your GPA and the class is noted on your transcript as Honors.
Seminars are focused on learning, and even learning about how you learn.
Honors Mindset Seminar is likely the only seminar you’ll take.

7. Honors Mindset Seminar Continuation Requirement
Successfully complete Honors Mindset Seminar as your first Honors Learning Experience
Earn a B or better: 800 points or more
ReggieNet grade book will be accurate the week of October 9
Last day to WX from a class is Friday, October 13
Be in touch with your Honors Advisor if you are considering dropping Honors Mindset Seminar
Current/Transfer students should contact Christie Martin
You know from your syllabus that students are expected to successfully complete Honors Mindset Seminar as their first Honors Learning Experience during the fall semester.
“Successful completion” is considered earning 800 points or more, or a B or better. To be clear, this means if you do not earn a B in Honors Mindset Seminar, you will not be able to continue in the Honors Program.
Grade book will be accurate as of your seminar the week of October 9
The last day to WX from a class is Friday, October 13.

8. Honors Sections
Found in General Education and some major specific courses

Register for the class as normal
Honors Sections are intended to deepen and enhance students’ learning experiences in smaller sections of courses. Honors Sections are typically found in General Education or introductory major-specific courses.
FTIC sections only: Spring 2018: CJS 102 (ICL) and Holocaust Literature and Film (LH)
You’ll be notified via the Honors listserv when Honors Section information is available on the Honors website.
Christie Martin is the contact person if you have questions.
You register for the class as normal.

Check the Honors website for an easy-to-read, updated list of Honors Sections. This is found under Academics- Honors Learning Experiences- Honors Sections and then select the semester you’re looking for.

10. CourseFinder : How to verify Honors Sections
We know you use CourseFinder to look at class times, professors, etc. If it’s an Honors Section, it should say “Honors” under “Course Specification.”

11. Registration : How to verify Honors Sections
Finally, in the registration system itself, you’ll see “Requirement Designation: Honors Only” and “Class Attributes: Honors Course” under the Enrollment Information for that section.

12. Honors Travel

Alternative Spring Break:

Pre-trip meetings Wednesday evenings
Travel during Spring Break: March 10 – 17, 2018
Honors Travel includes both domestic and international opportunities.
Through Alternative Spring Break, students will travel to a domestic location over Spring Break to perform service. The experience includes pre-trip meetings, the actual travel, and some post-trip wrap-up.

The application is available now with a deadline of October 2.
This year, students are traveling to Louisiana to work with junior achievement. Pick up a handout at the front desk on your way out if you’re interested in more information!
Because of the additional learning components to the curriculum, only Honors ASB will count as an Honors Learning Experience.

13. Honors Travel

Travel over the summer or a semester break
IDS 121
General Education – Language in the Humanities
AMALI (depending on the location)
International trips might be over the summer or a semester break. Past locations include Florence, Italy; Germany; Peru; Merida, Mexico
Honors Travel will include pre-trip meetings, which might be an Honors Exploration or could be the class associated with the travel
The course, which could be before, during, after, or all, will be IDS 121 (each trip decimalized with a different last 2 numbers, like A58, A67).
This course can count for General Education Language in the Humanities, if you need it, otherwise it’s an elective. Depending on the location (like Peru or Mexico), the course can count for AMALI/Global Studies.

14. Honors Travel
2018

Cuba
Class: IDS 121A64 in Spring 2018
Travel: March 10 – 19, 2018
Application deadline: November 1
Approximate cost: $4,000
(including tuition, airfare, meals, accommodations, etc.)
Cuba details:
Spend time in Havana with a few day trips to visit tobacco and coffee farms and a historic sugar plantation. Learn about the culture, people, history, politics, art, and economy of Cuba.
Encourage students to review the budget. Cost can be lowered based on actual air fare, if a student already has a passport; also includes spending money, which will vary.
No exploration, just the class. Students will attend class for 5 weeks prior to spring break, travel over break, and then after the trip assignments will be submitted online.
If you are applying for the trip, save the class time in your schedule; plan it as part of your spring even though you won’t register right away

15. Honors Program Requirements
1 Honors Learning Experience (HLE) each semester
Grade of C or better required in all HLEs that result in a grade (with the exception of HMS)
Not required when off campus
Study abroad
Student Teaching
Fall semester of PDS
Field based semester for Special Education
Full time (12 hours) internship
As you’re planning and registering for spring, keep in mind your Honors Program requirements and options.
Honors Program requirements and the options for Honors Learning Experiences will be discussed throughout the rest of the semester in seminar.
Your requirement is one HLE per semester.
C or better in HLEs that result in a grade (with the exception of Honors Mindset Seminar)
Not required when completely off campus

16. Honors Program Requirements
Honors Program Scholar designation requires a minimum of 3 Honors Learning Experiences
“Banking” an Honors Learning Experience (HLE)
Multiple HLE in a semester: “Bank” 1 for a future semester
Only 1 HLE in the “bank” at a time
Honors Program Scholar requires a minimum of 3 HLEs….so if you are off campus for a semester (or 2) you need to plan to be sure you have at least 3. One per semester. JUST ASK. We will review this at the end of the semester.
When you complete more than 1 HLE, you can “bank” one to use in the future.
Think of it as being “in reserve” or just like extra money in the bank, you put it away to use when you need it later.
Only 1 HLE in the bank at a time.
If pressed on this, our goal is persistence and participation in the program. We want the Honors experience to be throughout a student’s academic career. If they do everything as a freshman and sophomore, they would miss out on Honors experiences in major classes, which can be some of the most meaningful.

There are a variety of options for spring.
The application for Honors ASB is available on the Honors website now. This would count as a spring HLE.
The deadline to apply for the Cuba trip is November 1.
Throughout the rest of the semester, you’ll learn about Explorations, Contracts, and Research opportunities. Some of these you’ll be able to register for later in the fall semester, others you will put into place at the beginning of the spring.
