Hans Oersted – recognized, when working with electric currents that the needle of a nearby compass moved Why coils – coils reinforce the field Conclusion: Moving electric charges generate a magnetic field Historical significance of this discovery – it is the most important discovery in modern science
2
Electric motor – if moving electric current can generate a magnetic field, this magnetic field can interact with another magnetic field and cause motion. How can this be used as a motor? the interaction of the two magnetic fields can cause motion, if we can reverse the direction of one of the magnetic fields, we can cause constant motion AC motor – the current alternates to cause the direction of the magnetic field to alternate: DC motor – direct current, need a split ring commutator to cause current direction to change
3
Hypothesis – If electric current can produce magnetic effects, it may follow that magnetism can produce electric current Conclusion: Electric current can be produced by changing magnetic fields How is this phenomena useful? it allows us to generate electricity
4
Energy Source – source of electrical energy
Wall outlet, battery, generator Wires – conductors to carry the flow of current Usually copper or aluminum Load – device that converts electrical energy into other forms Light bulb, motor Water analogy – energy source = pump wires = pipes load = sprinkler
5
Potential – electrical pressure (volts)
Current – flow of electrons (amperes) Resistance – extent to which electrons are impeded through a circuit (ohms ) Power – the rate at which electrical energy is converted to other forms (watts)
