2. The New NIH Biosketch B: Neil, why do we have a new biosketch for NIH?
N: We know journal titles are not a great way to judge scientific accomplishments. But that is what the old biosketch format encouraged people to do. So our leadership decided we should give applicants the chance to put their work into context in their own words.
The new biosketch
allow researchers to describe up to five most significant contributions to science along with the historical background that framed their research (Contributions to Science, Section C)
include an optional link to works from a publicly available source
extend the page limit from four to five

3. Why? Allows applicants to:
describe the magnitude and significance of their scientific contributions (including publications)
provide more detailed information about their research experience in the context of the proposed project

Key Policy tweaks
Minimize overstuffing- no graphics
Citation Enhancements
Allowing non-peer reviewed publications to be included to correspond with the allowance of other non-peer reviewed research products (from ‘reference up to four peer-reviewed publications or other non-publication research products’ to ‘cite up to four publications or research products’)
If applicant provides a URL to their publications, it must be on a federal (.gov) website
Key clarifications
Integrating instructions for institutional research training, institutional career development, or research education grant applications with main biosketch
Clarifications to ensure junior applicants can better describe their productivity
Minimize overstuffing
Disallowing inclusion of graphics, figures and tables (also not supported by SciENcv)
Adding overstuffing warnings to Sections A and C
Clarifications to ensure junior applicants can better describe their productivity
Clarifying that research products can include conference proceedings such as meeting abstracts, posters or other presentations
Clarifying that people can mention in-progress products (e.g. manuscripts under review) in the narrative for Section C, but not cite them as one of their citations
These citations do not have to be authored by you, but do have to be relevant to your contribution.

Requesting people add other names used to author research products in section A
Citation Enhancements
Adding research products as allowable citations to section A to correspond with their allowance in Section C
Deleting the requirement that the past 3 years of research support are listed in order of relevance.
Minor Clarifications
Extensive changes for clarity- Using shorter sentences, bullets and shorter paragraphs
Clarifying that the URL for a publication list is optional (as always intended, and conveyed in the FAQ)
