1 Module 7: Data Analysis and Probability: Formulating appropriate questions Tools for collecting and organizing data

2 Content Learning Targets
Participants will : Formulate appropriate questions for collecting data Use appropriate tools for collecting and organizing data

3 Language Learning Targets
Participants will define: Data analysis Pictographs and histograms Graphs and statistical plots

4 Data analysis and probability Forming the right questions
Early one morning, an IT technician manning a help desk received a frantic call. An executive assistant explained that she had accidentally spilled a cup of coffee on the keyboard of her boss’s new computer. The young woman was frantic when she asked if she had ruined the keyboard.

5 Data analysis and probability Forming the right questions
The technician considered this for a moment, then deciding that a $38 keyboard could be replaced easily and inexpensively, told the young woman: “Unplug the keyboard and rinse it with clear water. Then set the keyboard aside and let it dry thoroughly before plugging it in again.” Greatly relieved, the woman thanked the technician and hung up.

6 Data analysis and probability Forming the right questions
Within the hour, the help desk received a follow-up call from an irate executive demanding to know what “$&%#” instructed his executive assistant to put his brand new $3000 laptop computer in the sink and douse it with water. Asking the right questions is vital. Acting on insufficient data could prove disastrous.

7 Data analysis and probability Forming the right questions
Questions should be specific, concise and focused on your objectives Questions should not be leading Questions should not be biased Questions should allow respondents to provide their answer Place questions in a logical order that flows well Do not use too many questions

8 Organizing data activities
Batteries 1 Batteries 2 Car color AP History

9 Assignment: Math application plan #3
Select from the list below, draft a one-page implementation plan for your chosen topic. Plan is to include: grade level, how topic will be introduced, key instructional strategies and assessment strategies. Creating questionnaires Tally charts Pictographs Bar graphs Line graphs Frequency tables Line plots Stem and leaf plots Circle graphs Scatterplots Histograms Box and whisker plots
