GHILLIE SUIT CONSTRUCTION

GHILLIE SUIT The ghillie suit serves as a base for your camouflage and it is designed to be used with natural vegetation. The object is not to look like a bush, but to look like nothing. The suit does not make the sniper invisible and certainly will not make him bulletproof, it is only a tool to aid the sniper in stalking his target.

TLO ACTION: Construct a Ghillie Suit
CONDITIONS: In classroom or field environment; given a student handout, FM and ghillie suit construction material. STANDARDS: Construct a ghillie suit IAW Chapter 4, Section 1, FM Students are required to use a ghillie suit during stalking exercises. Students will achieve 70% or higher on a graded stalk and written exams to remain in the course.

GHILLIE SUIT Camouflage uniform that is covered with irregular patterns of garnish or netting. Base from which to build on his individual camouflage. The suit breaks up the body’s outline, and creates a three-dimensional form that allows the sniper to blend into his immediate surroundings.

HISTORY The ghillie suit was first employed by the British Lovat scouts in World War I. The suit gets its name from the Scottish gamekeepers called “Ghillies” who developed and used it to hide from and capture clever poachers.
