1 Interpreting Circle Graphs
Section 2.3 Interpreting Circle Graphs

2 Things to Know Data – pieces of information collected
Data is collected by: An experiment A survey Polls Interviews Observations Talley Sheets Questionnaires

3 Things to Know Circle graphs – are used to display data that is part of a whole, or any percentage data. The percentages in a circle graph always add up to 100% All graphs include: A title (explains what the graph represents) Data categories have labels A scale (appropriate for the data) A key (explains how to read the graph)

4 Circle Graph What percentage & fraction is 1st quarter?
What percentage & fraction is 2nd quarter? What percentage & fraction is 3rd quarter? What percentage & fraction is 4th quarter?

5 TRANSPORTATION The circle graph shows which method of transportation students use to get to Martin Luther King, Jr., Middle School. Which method of transportation do most students use? Example 3-1a

6 ICE CREAM The circle graph shows which flavor of ice cream students consider their favorite. Which flavor of ice cream is considered the favorite by most students? Example 3-1b

7 TRANSPORTATION The circle graph shows which method of transportation students use to get to Martin Luther King, Jr., Middle School. How does the number of students who ride a moped to school compare to the number of students who take the bus? Example 3-2a

8 ICE CREAM The circle graph shows which flavor of ice cream students consider their favorite. How does the number of students who prefer peanut butter ice cream compare to the number of students who prefer cookie dough ice cream? Example 3-2c

9 LAND USE The graph at the right shows the different ways land is used in the United States. Which two land uses occupy the least amount of land? Example 3-3a

10 Students’ Favorite Sport
SPORTS The graph below shows students’ choices for favorite sport. Which two sports are the least favorite? Students’ Favorite Sport Example 3-3b

11 Part of a whole Step 1: Find out how many items make up the whole
Step 2: Look for parts of the graph you already know- like 1/2 88 students were asked their favorite color Find out what half of 88 is ½ x 88

12 Part of a Whole The next easiest part of a circle graph to find is half of a half, or ¼ Then 1/8 is half of 1/4 Find out what ¼ of the whole is ¼ x 88 1/8 x 88

13 Find the percent of a number
To find the percent of a number change the percent to a decimal Then multiply that decimal by the total number 33% = .33 33% of 66 .33 x 66

14 You try it!!! Find 23 % of 56 Find 13 % of 89 Find 42% of 68

15 Example The first 100 visitors to a state park were asked about their favorite park activity. The results are shown in this circle graph. What is the closest number of these 100 visitors who said hiking was their favorite activity?
