3 Yu Guang-zhong 余光中 Born in Nanjing, China in 1928
In his youth, he fled from China because of the Japanese invasion during WW2 Later, her returned to China but left again because of Communist victory during the Chinese civil war Most of his poems focused China being the homeland of so many that fled during different time periods

4 Zheng Chou-yu 鄭愁予 Born in Shandong Province in 1933
His first poems were rejected because of political view Taught at Yale University until 2004 Known as one of the most “Chinese” of all the modern poets Praised for combining classical Chinese imagery and European modernism “Free-versed in fixed forms” Free rhythm in poem but still has Chinese structure

5 Rong zi 蓉子 Born in Jiangsu Province, China. Now lives in Taipei, Taiwan. She married the poet Luo Men in Her works are mainly poems and essays. Today she has published ten books of poetry.

6 Luo Men羅門 Born in Hainan island in 1928.
He graduated from the American Civil Aviation Research Center in China and then worked there, now he retire and lives in Taipei. He writes a variety of poems, including war, romance, nature, and death.

7 Nostalgia 余光中 This is one of the most famous poem written by Yu Guang-zhong. Nostalgia means a yearning to return to a better time. In the text, nostalgia is represented as inanimate object like a stamp and a ticket. What do the inanimate objects stand for? Reflects the authors personal experiences in China. The poem vividly portrays the relations between the people on both sides of the Taiwan Straits(sea).

8 Mistake 鄭愁予 The author is a passerby in a small village
A passerby and a lonely wife A big changes in woman’s mood, from hope to despair. A prodigal without solicitude, he passed by the village so quickly. A woman with solicitude, she is waiting her husband. Time: March (Spring) young

An aspiration of a leisure and carefree world. Depicts people who live in the city as solitary and lonely people The sky- umbrella

10 Journal Questions  Do you experience nostalgia the way “Nostalgia presents it? If so, how. If not, explain. Can nostalgia be a mistake? Explain. In your own words, describe the mistake that is made in the poem. Do we, as individuals or a collective body make the same “mistakes” as the poem describes? What’s the differences between these two poems? Why?
