1 Psalm 119 (3) Words about God’s Word
“The Word of God” Psalm 119 (3) Words about God’s Word

2 Psalm 119 The longest psalm – 176 verses and written in Hebrew poetry based upon the Hebrew alphabet (22 sections of 8 verses) We have examined the words used to describe His word – Law, Testimonies, Ways, Precepts, Statutes, Commandments, Judgments, Word & Truth The Theme is the Word of God Today, some more selected verses

3 Psalm 119:63 “I am a companion of all who fear You, And of those who keep Your precepts.” Contrast this with 119:53, “Indignation has taken hold of me Because of the wicked, who forsake Your law.” Just as we are indignant toward the ungodly, do we prefer the godly? Romans 12:10 (Matt. 7:12), Hebrews 10:24-25 Psalm 119:74 Who are your friends?

4 Psalm 119:64 “The earth, O LORD, is full of Your mercy; Teach me Your statutes.” God can be seen in many ways in this world Romans 1:20, Acts 14:17, He did not leave us without witness – rain, seasons, food, etc. Matthew 5:45 God had proven Himself prophetically – scientific and naturally That can prove opportunity to teach His mercy in His plan

5 Psalm 119:64 “The earth, O LORD, is full of Your mercy; Teach me Your statutes.” Do we see the mercy of God around us? Consider prophecy in nature and science – Hebrews 11:3, not made of things that are visible Job 26:7, “He hangs the world on nothing.” Ecclesiastes 1:6, “the wind goes toward the south and turns around to the north…” Lev. 17:11, blood is the source of life.

6 Psalm 119:72 “The law of Your mouth is better to me Than thousands of coins of gold and silver.” We cannot put a value on the word of God. When we consider the rewards it offers, we ought to cherish it. And so teaches scripture! Proverbs 8:10-11, receive instruction and not silver…it is better than rubies Psalm 19:10, “more to be desired are they than gold, yea than much fine gold”

7 Psalm 119:72 “The law of Your mouth is better to me Than thousands of coins of gold and silver.” Proverbs 23:23, “buy the truth and do not sell it, also wisdom and instruction and understanding” Matthew 13:44-46, Luke 9:25, what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world and is destroyed or lost Do we value the Law of God?

8 Psalm 119:89 “Forever, O LORD, Your word is settled in heaven.” His word endures – 1 Peter 1:25, Matthew 24:35 Hebrews 13:8, Malachi 3:6 – He is the same and does not change Far too many dismiss His word today to follow their own ways. But this does NOT change that His word says what it says.

9 Psalm 119:97 “Oh, how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day.” 1) We need to love His word 2) We need to meditate on it Philippians 4:8, Study it – 2 Timothy 2:15 3) It ought to be continually on our minds – Psalm 1:2, 119: How much time do give to His word?

10 “Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.”
Psalm 119:105 “Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.” His word gives us direction and points the way we should go! 2 Peter 1:3, 19 Without it we are lost – both physically and spiritually! We need to let His word guide our steps

11 We cannot give up on His word!
Psalm 119:112 “I have inclined my heart to perform Your statutes Forever, to the very end.” His word is not something we only consult when things are well. We don’t retire from serving Him while on earth! Revelation 2:10, 14:13 2 Peter 2:20-22 We cannot give up on His word!

12 Psalm 119:160 “The entirety of Your word is truth, And every one of Your righteous judgments endures forever.” 2 Timothy 3:16,17 – all scripture of God is profitable to make us complete Consider Matthew 15:3-9, James 2:10, Revelation 22:18-19 Romans 15:4, even the Old Testament is God’s word! We cannot pick and choose which commands of God to obey!

13 Verses not mentioning His word
Only 5 verses do not mention His word directly in this psalm 119:90 – His faithfulness endures (continue vs. 91) 119: – where does his justice and righteousness come from? 119:132 – If you love His name, you will love His word 119:149 – Where do we learn of God’s lovingkindness and justice?

14 God HAS spoken! Will we listen and obey?
