Room 23 March 6-10, 2017 Language Arts Important Dates: Word Study
This week we reviewed our theme, “From Mountain to Ocean.” We reviewed our vocab words, desert, ocean, and scenery, and practiced creating detailed sentences using these words. We practiced writing more detailed sentences and talked about using end punctuation. We also started making up our own stories. Students are encouraged to use their imaginations to create detailed stories that have a problem and solution. Later on, we will choose one of these stories to get published! Word Study This week we reviewed the long /i/ sound. We reviewed what “magic e” does and reviewed the sounds/spelling patterns -igh, -y, and -ie. We practiced adding and taking away letters to form new words. We reviewed the words on our word wall. Please practice these at home! Please make sure you are reviewing our phonics skills at home. Spelling is becoming much harder for some students. Alternates for the week:
Social Studies We read the book, Suki’s Kimono, and looked at examples of kimonos Japanese people wear. We discussed and sorted kimonos that would be worn in specific seasons. Next week, we will be making our very own kimonos! Science We continued with our science unit, Recycling. We practiced sorting trash by looking at recyclable and non-recyclable items. We also learned about the life cycle of trash. We started drawing posters encouraging students on Devon to recycle that will later be hung in the hallway. Ask your child how he/she plans on going green! Math This week we continued with chapters 12 and 16, Numbers to 40 & 100. We have been practicing making numbers with place value charts, comparing numbers to 100 using various strategies, recognizing number patterns by adding or subtracting, and counting and reading numbers to 100. Please practice addition/subtraction facts with your child at home as they are going to get much harder!
