1 Dust, lung and infection

2 The lungs are protected by a series of defense mechanisms in different regions of the respiratory tract. When a person breathes in, particles suspended in the air enter the nose but not all of them reach the lungs.

3 The nose is an efficient filter.
Most large particles are stopped in it, until they are removed mechanically by blowing the nose or sneezing Some of the smaller particles pass through the nose to reach the windpipe and the dividing air tubes that lead to the lung

4 These tubes are called bronchi and bronchioles.
All of these airways are lined by cells. The mucus they produce catches most of the dust particles. Tiny hairs called cilia, covering the air tubes, move the mucus upward and out into the throat, where it is either coughed up and spat out, or swallowed.

5 The air reaches alveoles in the inner part of the lungs with any dust particles that avoided the defenses in the nose and airways. The alveoles are very important because through them, the body receives oxygen and releases carbon dioxide

6 Dust that reaches the alveoles there are no cilia is attacked by special cells called macrophages. These are extremely important for the defense of the lungs. They keep the alveolecs clean. Macrophages virtually swallow the particles. Then the macrophages, in a way which is not well understood, reach the part of the airways that is covered by cilia. The wavelike motions of the cilia move the macrophages which contain dust to the throat, where they are spat out or swallowed.

7 Besides macrophages, the lungs have another system for the removal of dust.
The lungs can react to the presence of germ-bearing particles by producing certain proteins. These proteins attach to particles to neutralize them. Dusts are tiny solid particles destroyed or entered in the air.

8 The particles are "inorganic" or "organic," depending on the source of the dust. Inorganic dusts can come from grinding metals or minerals such as stone or soil. Examples of inorganic dusts are silica, asbestos, and coal

9 Organic dusts originate from plants or animals
Organic dusts originate from plants or animals. An example of organic dust is dust that arises from handling grain. These dusts can contain a great number of substances. Aside from the vegetable or animal component, organic dusts may also contain fungi or microbes and the toxic substances given off by microbes. For example, histoplasmosis, psittacosis and Q Fever are diseases that people can get if they breathe in organic that are infected with a certain microorganisms.

10 Dusts can also come from organic chemicals
Several factors influence the effects of inhaled particles. Among these are some properties : Particle size is usually the critical factor . Chemical composition is important because some substances, when in particle form, can destroy the cilia that the lungs use for the removal of particles. Cigarette smoking may alter lungs clearing .

11 Characteristics of the person inhaling particles can also influence the effects of dust. Breathing rates and smoking are among the most important. The sediment of dust in the lungs increases with the length of time the breath is held and how deeply the breath is taken. (exercise) breathing is through the nose or mouth is also important

12 Some types of lung diseases caused by the inhalation of dust are called by the general term "pneumoconiosis. The changes which occur in the lungs vary with the different types of dust In silica exposure lung elasticity is normal but in asbestos, beryllium, cobalt lung surface covered completely and become stiff

13 Not all inhaled particles produce scar tissue
Not all inhaled particles produce scar tissue. Dusts such as carbon and iron remain within macrophages until they die normally. The released particles are then taken in again by other macrophages. If the amount of dust overwhelms the macrophages, dust particles coat the inner walls of the airways without causing scarring(entrocosis), but only producing mild damage, or maybe no

16 How can we protect the lungs from dust
To avoid respiratory or other problems caused by exposure to dust, hazardous substances should be substituted with non-hazardous substances. Where substitution is not possible, other engineering control methods should be introduced. Some examples are: use of wet processes enclosure of dust-producing processes under negative air pressure (slight vacuum compared to the air pressure outside the enclosure) exhausting air containing dust through a collection system before emission to the atmosphere use of vacuums instead of brooms good housekeeping efficient storage and transport controlled disposal of dangerous waste

17 Dust pneumonia is an acute type of respiratory distress that can develop into an infection of the lungs Typically, it develops by excessive exposure to dust and dirt inhalation. Most dust and dirt if inhaled in small amounts will safely pass through the lungs with the assistance of the cilia .

18 With a case of dust pneumonia, the dust travels deep into the alveoli preventing the cilia from moving the dirt through---leading to infection, possible respiratory failure and lung damage. Dust pneumonia is caused from over exposure to airborne dust and dirt particles such as a dust storm or dirt turned up by wind. One of the initial symptoms of dust pneumonia is coughing

19 The cough is the host response to forcing dirt and debris out of the airways and lungs.
Beginning as a dry cloth, the lungs work against the debris and uses mucus to attempt to force the dirt and particles out. Once dust and soil enter the lungs, cilia are unable to move freely and combat the particles out of the body allowing the dirt to take over. Debris then rests inside of the lungs and can even cause the cilia to stop moving. This is when infection is likely to set in. Initially, heavy mucus is coughed up along with the dirt giving it a mud-like appearance. Mucus may also begin to turn yellow and green.

20 wheezing Wheezing is another symptom of dust pneumonia. Wheezing is a type of sound that is heard each time someone expirate. As a symptom of dust pneumonia, wheezing is caused by the buildup of fluid and debris in the lungs. The wheezing is caused from the air passages inside the lungs constricting---making it more difficult to breathe.

21 Fever is a sign of advanced lung pneumonia
Fever is a sign of advanced lung pneumonia. Any fever over 100 degrees Fahrenheit should be evaluated by a physician---especially if other symptoms such as cough, colored mucus and wheezing are present. The fever is one of the first indications that there is an infection present. Fever is the body's natural way of fighting off an infection or other foreign substances in the body.

22 Septic Shock Septic shock may be induced by dust pneumonia. Septic shock is caused when an infection spreads into the blood stream or other parts of the body---causing the body and its organs to eventually shut down. This is a life-threatening condition that develops once an advanced infection in the lungs has spread to other parts of the body. The patient must be hospitalized and placed on a high dosage of antibiotics and fluids to assist with recovery
