2. Oriental vs. Persian Rugs
The terms “Persian rug” and “Oriental rug” are often used interchangeably.
However, there is a distinction between the two.
While all Persian rugs are Oriental rugs, not all Oriental rugs are Persian rugs.

3. About Persian Rugs
Historically, Persian rugs were thought to be the best quality rugs which is why they are in a separate category from other Oriental rugs.
Now, quality rugs can come from all over the world.
Persian rug designs were named after the city, village, or weaving group they originated in.
These patterns still go by their traditional names, but they can be found in rugs from all over.

4. Country of Origin
The country of origin is the biggest distinguishing factor between Persian rugs and Oriental rugs.
Oriental rugs are carpets made in Asia and the middle east.
Generally from China, India, Turkey, Iran, Tibet, Egypt, or Afghanistan.
Persian rugs are carpets specifically made in Iran (which was formally Persia).

5. Knot Type
High quality, authentic Oriental rugs are always hand knotted, but the types of knots used are different.
Oriental rugs are made with Ghiordes (symmetrical) knots.
Persian rugs are made with Senneh (asymmetrical) knots.
Senneh knots create a rug with a more symmetrical and precise design and a higher knot density.

6. Oriental vs. Persian Rugs
Although Persian rugs were traditionally thought to be the highest caliber of rug, it’s important to note that these days it’s easy to find extremely high quality rugs from all over the rug making world.
