“Mu of the Shoe” Friction

Curriculum Big Idea: All forces arise from the interactions between different objects. Concept: When two surfaces of objects are in contact with each other, the force of friction between them depends on the nature of the materials in contact and the normal force. Competency: Construct a free body diagram indicating the magnitude and direction of the forces on an object and use information from the diagram to determine the motion of the object. PA Standard B1: Analyze the relationships among the net force acting on a body, the mass of the body, and the resulting acceleration using Newton’s Second Law of Motion.

Goals Know that changing the surfaces in contact, will change the coefficient of friction between the surfaces. Find the coefficient of friction between two surfaces. Compare surfaces based on their coefficients of friction.

Today’s Honors Agenda Opener: What is center of mass? How would a football player react differently when you push him at his center of mass versus when you push or pull on his legs? Unit 1.6: Mu of the Shoe Activity 1. What Do You Think? 2. Tug of War Challenge 3. Mu of the Shoe Experiment 4. Closure: What is the ONLY factor that affects the COEFFICIENT OF FRICTION? What 2 factors affect the FORCE of friction? Take Home Assignment: Friction Problems (see handout)

Today’s Academic Agenda
Opener: What is center of mass? How would a football player react differently when you push him at his center of mass versus when you push or pull on his legs? Unit 1.6: Mu of the Shoe Activity 1. What Do You Think? 2. Tug of War Challenge 3. Read Physics Talk as a class. 4. Closure: What is the ONLY factor that affects the COEFFICIENT OF FRICTION? What 2 factors affect the FORCE of friction? Academic Take Home Assignment: Friction Reflection in packet.
