11. Children develop at their own rates, and in their own ways
Children develop at their own rates, and in their own ways. The development statements and their order should not be taken as necessary steps for individual children. They should not be used as checklists. The age / stage bands overlap because these are not fixed age boundaries but suggest a typical range of development.

Practitioners must indicate whether children are meeting expected levels of development, or if they are exceeding the expected levels, or not yet reaching expected levels (‘emerging’).

16. Words are made up from small units of sound called phonemes
Words are made up from small units of sound called phonemes. Phonics teaches children to be able to listen carefully and identify the phonemes that make up each word. This helps children to learn to read words and to spell words.

18. The English language only has around 44 phonemes but there are around 120 graphemes or ways of writing down those 44 phonemes. Obviously we only have 26 letters in the alphabet so some graphemes are made up from more than one letter.

22. Each half term we give you a new choice of options
Each half term we give you a new choice of options. Learning logs are optional and children are encouraged to chose activities that interest them or show their skills. As they continue at Swallowfield it is hoped they will become independent learners panning their own activities. The activities can be completed to whatever level you chose. We share their learning logs on a Friday in place of ‘show and tell’ ctivities do not need to be completed independently or recorded independently by your child.

Each child will receive 4 of the ‘tricky’ words each week, please practice reading these and learning these on sight. Your child does not need to be able to write these.
