Super Duper Cheat Sheet for Naming Compounds
Thornburg 2016
2
Binary Ionic Compounds
Has one metal and one non - metal • cation is written first - If it is a transition metal, include a Roman Numeral • anion is written second • Ending of the anion is changed to -ide • Do not use prefixes (di, tri-, tetra, etc.) Thornburg 2016
3
Try These… Ca O Fe Cl 3 Ag F Calcium oxide Iron (III) Silver fluoride
Thornburg 2016
4
Ionic Compound w/ Polyatomic Ion
Has 3 or more elements in the formula at least one metal and at least one non - metal • metal is written first - If it is a transition metal, include a Roman Numeral • Anion is written second - need to memorize these ions - use super ion chart • Ending is usually - ate or - ite Thornburg 2016
5
Try These… Ca (OH)2 Fe (NO3) 2 KMnO 4 Calcium hydroxide
Iron (II) nitrate Potassium permanganate Thornburg 2016
6
Binary Molecular Compounds
Has two non - metals • Write the names of the elements in the order they appear in the formula (least electronegative element should be written first) • Change the ending of the second element to -ide • use prefixes if there is more than 1 atom of a particular element • Second element will always have a prefix Thornburg 2016
7
Try These… CO2 PCl3 N2 F4 Carbon Dioxide Phosphorus trichloride
Dinitrogen tetrafluoride Thornburg 2016
8
Rule #1 anion used ends in - ide, acid name ends in -ic, and begins with - hydro Chloride (Cl1-) HCl = Hydrochloric Acid Thornburg 2016
