1 Tatiana Mukinay Age: 22 Undergraduate:
‘Biomedical Materials Science degree’ a 3 year course with the Biomaterials department ( ) at the University of Birmingham. Postgraduate: ‘PhD in Surface Engineering with integrated studies’ a 4 year course with IMPaCT CDT (Innovative Metal Processing and Centre of Training) (Centre of Doctorial Training) ( ). The programme is ran by University of Leicester, Birmingham and Nottingham. I am based in Birmingham in the Metallurgy and Materials Department.

2 When did you know you wanted to continue your study to a PhD?
The opportunity presented itself in the second semester of my final year (around March), while conducting my final year project. The idea of actually pursuing a master or PhD to continue my current research at the time was discussed with my sub-supervisor. After having a chat with my supervisor, it became clear that a masters or PhD (my choice!!) could be on the table for grabs as long as I graduated with a 2:1.

3 Steps you took to secure your PhD
I graduated with a 2:1 and with the second highest grade in my final year project in my year group. Had to submit cv, a statement (stating why you should be ‘hired’), and two references.

4 How will your PhD support your career aspirations?
I don’t have an end goal as of yet- and I’m absolutely fine with that. BUT, I am passionate/interested in my project- I would heavily advise that for anyone considering a PhD. I am still researching what I could potential do with it and ideally I would love to use it the future. One thing I am sure of right now is that I do not want to pursue a career in academia.
