Denominationalism The Bible says that there is only one religious body and one faith that is acceptable to God. “There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all” (Ephesians 4:4-6).

Yet, among those who claim to be Christians today there are thousands of different faiths and thousands of different kinds of churches. These various religious bodies with their differing beliefs and practices are called, “Denominations.”

Some denominations are very tolerant of other denominations. They view all the various denominational groups as part of the one body of Christ. Some denominations are very tolerant of other denominations. They view all the various denominational groups as part of the one body of Christ. They say that all the various denominations can have unity with one another and tolerate one another even though they all teach and practice different things. This is the “ecumenical” idea – you can just join the church of your choice because one is as good as another.

What’s Wrong With Denominationalism?
It is condemned by God. Denominationalism is the dividing of believers into religious parties. The Bible condemns this kind of division. “For it has been declared to me concerning you, my brethren, by those of Chloe's household, that there are contentions among you. Now I say this, that each of you says, ‘I am of Paul,’ or ‘I am of Apollos,’ or ‘I am of Cephas,’ or ‘I am of Christ.’ Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul?” (1 Corinthians 1:11-13).
