This lesson is for 6th grade students and follows the ODE standards for mathematics.
Concluding the lesson, students will:
Understand what a fraction is
Demonstrate how to add and subtract fractions
Solve with different denominators

5. Fraction Types
Proper Fraction: The fraction is in lowest terms where the numerator number is less than the denominator number.
Examples:
Improper Fraction: Where the fraction can be reduced into lower terms. The numerator is greater than or equal to the denominator.

Mixed Fraction: The fraction can be reduced. It can be written as a improper fraction. It has a whole plus a part.
Examples: 2 5

7. Simplest Form Examples: 8 2
Fractions should always be in simplest form.
How do you get the fraction in simplest form? You have the find the GCF and divide the numerator and denominator by that GCF.
Examples:
4 is the GCF for 8 and 12.
2÷3 is the correct answer. It can no longer be simplified.

You can’t just add and subtract fractions. They have to be in the same terms. It is like adding apples and oranges, you can’t add them together.
You have to find the LCD of the two denominators. This number will be the new denominator. Next, multiply the numerator by the number you multiplied to the denominator.

The LCD is 15. = +

9. Fractions
To add or subtract you go straight across. You add or subtract the numerators. The denominators have the be the same to be able to preform the operation. You don’t add or subtract the denominator, you just carry it over to the answer.
Go straight across 6 = + 7

Simplify: ? = ? = = 1
3 goes into 3 and 6. 3 goes into 3 one time and 3 goes into 6 two times
9 goes into 9 once. As you see 9÷9 is just one whole. Any fraction over its same number is just 1.

Add: + 1 + = = = 1 + = =
10 is the LCD. Remember to simplify. Since the answer is an improper fraction you have to make it a mixed number.
The denominators are the same so you can just add across. Simplify down.

12. Subtracting - = - = - = - = - = ? ? = Sub:
Subtracting is the same as adding but taking away instead of adding. You have to have the same denominators here as well. - = - =
Sub: ? ? - = = - = - =
The denominators are the same so you can just subtract. Then make sure you simplify.
LCD is 9. Now you can subtract.

13. Mixed Numbers
Mixed numbers are similar once you get it into an improper fraction.
To get to a fraction you multiply the whole number by the denominator and then add that new number to the numerator. = = 2
2x6=12 +5=17
You don’t have to show the steps of multiplying and adding, I did just to show you how to make it an improper fraction.

14. Mixed Numbers = = 2 You have to simplify the improper fraction.
To simplify a fraction you will determine how many times the denominator goes into the numerator. Then the left over number is the numerator. = =
6x2= =5 2
