Now that we’ve talked about DIRECT DEMOCRACY! And REPRESENTATIVE DEMOCRACY! we can move on to forms of government where only one person is in control…

22 Monarchy and Dictatorship
Autocracy

23 Autocracy A form of government in which political power is controlled by one individual such as a monarch, dictator, emperor, etc. We’re going to talk about two kinds of autocracy… Monarchs! Dictators!

24 Monarchy Rule by kings, queens, princes, and princesses… sometimes by other names, but always MONARCHS! Leaders usually gain their power because their parents were rulers too (power inherited). No Constitution Monarchy was the most common form of government until the 19th century, but it is no longer prevalent.

25 Examples Past United Kingdom, Denmark, and Japan Present In Absolute, the Monarch has absolute power over the state and government. Pope with the Vatican and Saudi Arabia (A) In Constitutional, the Monarch is sort of a figurehead, who is still subject to a constitution. Queen Elizabeth with the United Kingdom, Sweden, Japan, & Thailand (C)

26 Draw a Symbol

27 Dictatorship In a dictatorship, power is not inherited, but is acquired by force (military or political) Dictators have absolute control over the lives of their citizens and usually people are not allowed to voice their negative opinions

28 Examples Past Hitler/Germany Mussolini/ Italy Present North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Il

30 We’ve talked about DEMOCRACIES…
What else? We’ve talked about DEMOCRACIES… Democracy is… rule by the people!

31 What else? … and AUTOCRACIES… Autocracy is… … rule by one!

32 … but what other forms of government are there?
What else? … but what other forms of government are there? What if, instead of everyone or just one person, a few people got together to rule a nation? Rule by Few!

33 Oligarchy

34 Oligarchy “Rule by few”, small group of people have power
Power can be based on several things: Military strength (military) Family power (inherited) = Aristocracy Religious control (God or higher power) Oligarchies can often come from or lead to other forms of government (like autocracies)

35 Examples Past Sparta, Greece Russia Present Pakistan Fiction Examples Panam in Hunger Games A modern example of oligarchy could be seen in South Africa during the 20th century. Here, the basic characteristics of oligarchy are particularly easy to observe, since the South African form of oligarchy was based on racism. After the Boer War, a tacit agreement was reached between English- and Afrikaans-speaking whites. Together, they made up about twenty percent of the population, but this small percentage had access to virtually all the educational and trade opportunities, and they proceeded to deny this to the black majority even further than before. Although this process had been going on since the mid-18th century, after 1948 it became official government policy and became known worldwide as apartheid. This lasted until the arrival of democracy in South Africa in 1994, punctuated by the transition to a democratically-elected government dominated by the black majority.

36 Draw a Symbol

37 Theocracy

38 Theocracy “Theo” means “god” in Greek… so if a government is THEO-cratic that means it is ruled by… That’s right! A god or higher power! Leaders are usually religious leaders and society uses religious law to settle its disputes

39 Example Past Aztecs and Incas Present
Iran is a modern theocracy that uses the holy Islamic book, The Qur’an, as its guide. Vatican City

40 Draw a Symbol

41 Anarchy

43 What do you think that would be like?
