Chapter 6.1 Rules of Exponents
Objectives: 1.) Become familiar with the product of powers pattern and quotient of powers.
2
Power An expression made up of a base (ground number) and an exponent (flying number) Expands into repetitive multiplication Expand 1.) ) )
3
Product Properties Product of Powers-
If multiplying powers of with the SAME BASE, keep base and add the exponents Ex.) Power of Powers- If there is a power as a base, keep base and multiply exponents Ex.) (32)5 Power of a Product - If the base is a product, apply the exponent to each factor
4
Quotient Properties Quotient of Powers (Adam and Nolan’s Theorem)-
If you are dividing two powers with the SAME BASE, keep the base and subtract numerator exponent – denominator exponent Ex.) Power of Quotient (Trevor and Dan Theorem)- If there is a fraction as the base, apply the exponent to each the numerator and denominator
5
Zero and Negative Power Properties
Zero Exponent Property - Anything to the zero power is equal to 1 Ex: 30 Negative Property If the exponent is negative, cross the fraction line with the attached base and change the sign of exponent. Ex: Ex: (2x)-3
