Unit 2 Exponents

Standard MGSE8.EE.1 Know and apply the properties of integer exponents to generate equivalent numerical expressions.

Vocabulary Exponent - a quantity representing the power to which a given number or expression is to be raised, usually expressed as a raised symbol beside the number or expression. The exponent of a number says how many times to use that number in a multiplication. It is written as a small number to the right and above the base number. Base - The number that is going to be raised to a power, the number which will be multiplied according to the exponent. Power – exponent

Standard MGSE8.EE.3 Use numbers expressed in scientific notation to estimate very large or very small quantities, and to express how many times as much one is than the other. Scientific Notation - a way of expressing numbers that are too big or too small to be conveniently written.

Example of how to convert large numbers to scientific notation.

MGSE8.EE.4 MGSE8.EE.4 Add, subtract, multiply and divide numbers expressed in scientific notation, including problems where both decimal and scientific notation are used. Understand scientific notation and choose units of appropriate size for measurements of very large or very small quantities (e.g. use millimeters per year for seafloor spreading). Interpret scientific notation that has been generated by technology (e.g. calculators).
