2 This lesson discusses the involvement of the Marines during the events that occurred in 1942.

3 Lesson Objectives Locate specified Pacific Islands related to World War II on a map by their longitude and latitude. Describe the importance of Midway and Guadalcanal to the U.S. war effort in the Pacific. Identify terms related to Midway and Guadalcanal such as the Cactus Air Force, Carlson’s Air Force, Carlson’s Raiders, Edson’s Ridge, etc. Example:

8 Introduction The story of the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 is well known to most Americans. Midway, Johnson and the Palmyra Islands were also attacked on that day. Example:

9 Midway On December 7, the Japanese shelled Midway’s airbase in an effort to provide cover for their return from Pearl Harbor. The Battle of Midway began on June 4, 1942. The Battle of Midway became the first major victory against the Japanese and ended their last offensive in the Pacific. Example:

11 Carlson’s Raiders President Roosevelt authorized the formation of two raider battalions, one under the leadership of Lt. Col. Merritt Edson and one headed by Lt. Col. Evans Carlson. The purpose of these groups was to lead amphibious landings, practice guerilla warfare tactics, and make hit-and-run raids on the enemy. Example:

14 Guadalcanal A six month battle that was rich in heroes, Guadalcanal was the first offensive battle against the Japanese. The first issue facing the planning of this battle was who was to be in charge. The attack date was first set for August 1, 1942, and then pushed back a week. Example:

15 Winning Guadalcanal Guadalcanal was so important that in spite of the difficulty in fighting the Germans in Europe, President Roosevelt sent a message to the Joint Chiefs of Staff saying to send every possible weapon to the tiny island. The reinforcements of men and material prevented the Japanese from adding to their troops. Roosevelt called the winning of Guadalcanal the turning point of the war. Example:
