1 Unit 5: Traits R Us Please pick up the two papers up front and begin on the anticipation guide!

2 Drill: What do YOU know about DNA?
DNA: Replication Drill: What do YOU know about DNA? Essential Q of the Day: How does DNA copy itself?

3 What is DNA? DNA stands for DeoxyriboNucleic Acid
DNA is found in both Eukaryotic and Prokaryotic Cells DNA for Euk it is in the nucleus DNA for Prok it is in the cytoplasm The DNA of Eukaryotic Cells is a long strand The DNA of Prokaryotic Cells is circular

4 Why is dna important? DNA is important because it … genetic info :
STORES (is found in the nucleus) REPLICATES (copies itself) PASSES ALONG (your traits)

5 What does dna look like? DNA is made up of 3 key parts (NUCLEOTIDE):
Nitrogenous Bases! Adenine – Thymine – Guanine – Cytosine At The Grand Canyon Phosphate Group PO4 5 Carbon (C) Sugar Ribose

6 Why does DNA replicate? DNA in your body replicates (copies itself)
DNA must replicate in order to: Make new cells so you can grow and reproduce! What happens if your cells stop dividing? What happens if your cells divide too much?

7 What happens when dna replicates?
DNA gets separated down the middle Hydrogen bonds are broken Enzymes add new matching bases in the middle A pairs with T G pairs with C Enzymes check to make sure all pairs are correct Your cell divides

8 RNA Versus DNA Letter U: Uracil Letter T: Thymine
Found in the cytoplasm Found in the nucleus Letters A/G/C Takes DNA and makes proteins Found in living things Info for all life to function Have nucleotides 5 Carbon sugar is Ribose 5 Carbon sugar is Deoxyribose Single stranded Double stranded

9 Activity: Modeling DNA replication
Hands on Modeling Virtual Modeling

10 Exit ticket When you turn in your DNA Replication Activity pick up a blocked out piece of paper. In the first block (on the front) write a vocabulary word from the word wall. In the first block (on the back) write the definition or draw an image of that word. Do this for the first two boxes at the top! When you are done I will collect this exit ticket… you will get it back each class!
