3 Beginning in 1949 under Mao Zedong, a communist government was set up to lead China, which denied basic rights and freedoms of the Chinese people.

4 Mao’s and China’s communist view of government was similar to the Confucian view of government in that both stressed loyalty to government.

5 As a result, China’s communist government discouraged organized religions because they competed for the loyalties of the Chinese people.

6 In 1958, Mao launched the Great Leap Forward in an attempt to increase China’s agricultural and industrial output . . .

7 . . . by dividing China into communes, which ended up severely hurting China’s economy.
An estimated 30 million Chinese people died of starvation (1958 – 1961)

8 In 1966, Mao launched the Cultural Revolution to eliminate any opposition to himself and his government.

10 As a result of the Cultural Revolution, China’s economic and educational systems were disrupted.
