Mao Zedong- emerged as the leader of the Communists in China during the 1930’s.
Long March- Mao and 10,000 of his followers fled Guomindang forces and traveled 6,000 miles to northern China. Great Leap Forward- Mao launched this program and asked people to increase agricultural and industrial output.

Communes- groups of people who lived and worked together and hold property in common.
Cultural Revolution- Mao shut down schools and universities throughout China because he feared intellectuals, wanted to renew communist loyalties Red Guards- student fighters who attacked professors, government officials, and factory managers, many of whom were exiled or executed. Little Red Book- is a book of selected statements from speeches and writings by Mao Zedong

Tienanmen Square- demonstrators gathered here demanding more rights and freedoms, when they refused to disperse, the government sent in troops and tanks, 1,000’s of Chinese were killed or wounded.

The Four Modernizations:
Farming methods were modernized and mechanized Industry was upgraded Science and Technology were promoted and developed Defense systems and military forces were improved

Jiang Zemin- President of the People's Republic of China from 1993 to 2003
Jiang Jeishi- was a Chinese political and military leader who served as the leader of the Republic of China between 1928 and 1975 Zhuo Enlai- was the first Premier of the People's Republic of China, serving from October 1949-January Zhou served under Mao Zedong and was instrumental in consolidating the control of the Communist Party's rise to power.

Confucianism- a way of life based on the teachings of the Chinese scholar Confucius, stressing social and civic responsibilities. Nationalists- a person who advocates political independence for a country. Tank Man- A man who stood in front of a column of tanks on June 5, 1989, the morning after the Chinese military had suppressed the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989 by force. One Child Policy- to control the population in China, the government enacted a policy of family planning in which each family was permitted to have only one child Communist Civil War- was a civil war in China fought between forces loyal to the Kuomintang (KMT) -led government of the Republic of China, and forces loyal to the Communist Party of China. The conflict eventually resulted in the Republic of China (ROC) in Taiwan and the People's Republic of China (PRC) in mainland China.
