Because of Chairmen Mao’s failure in the Great Leap Forward He lost economic power within the Communist power. Rivals were starting to oppose Chairmen Mao.

What was the Purpose of the Cultural Revolution
1. restore China to the glory of the Han Dynasty 2. reemphasize Confucian traditional values 3. weaken communist ideas 4. eliminate opposition to Mao Zedong

Destroying the four olds. Old ideas, old culture, old customs, and old habits. These “four olds” interfered with the creation of a modern socialist society.

Graduates sent to the countryside for manual labor. Mao said; "It is necessary for intellectual students to go the countryside and be re-educated by poor or average peasants."

Freedoms of the Chinese people were lost. Education completely halted. Widespread economic failure. Cultural Revolution never truly ended until Chairmen Mao’s Death in 1976.
