1 Who was the Messiah that the Jews were expecting?
There were many prophecies in the Old testament which told the Jews that a Messiah (chosen one) would come. These prophecies told them many things about the Messiah. (word wall) WW

2 17 June 2018 The Messiah To understand what the Jewish beliefs about the Messiah were. To understand why Christians believe that Jesus is the Messiah

3 The Messianic Age The Jews believed that when the Messiah arrived, he would usher in the Messianic age. This would involve: Peace among all nations (Isaiah 2:4; Micah 4:3) Perfect harmony and abundance in nature (Isaiah 11:6-9) (but some interpret this as an allegory for peace and prosperity) All Jews return from exile to Israel (Isaiah 11:11-12; Jeremiah 23:8; 30:3; Hosea 3:4-5) Universal acceptance of the Jewish God and Jewish religion (Isaiah 2:3; 11:10; 66:23; Micah 4:2-3; Zechariah 14:9) No sin or evil; all Israel will obey the commandments (Zephaniah 3:13; Ezekiel 37:24) Reinstatement of the Temple (Ezekiel 37:26-27)

5 The Messiah The Jews were expecting a chosen one who would be a warrior king like King David. They hoped that he would defeat all their enemies and that he would reign over a golden age with Israel and the temple as the centre of the world. Modern followers of Judaism do not believe that Jesus was the Messiah and so they are still waiting for him to arrive. They believe that he will appear on the Mt of Olives and enter Jerusalem through the East gate.

7 Prophecies about the East Gate
Ezekiel 44: Then he brought me back to the outer gate of the sanctuary, which faces east; and it was shut. 2 And he said to me, "This gate shall remain shut; it shall not be opened, and no one shall enter by it; for the LORD, the God of Israel, has entered by it; therefore it shall remain shut. 3 Only the prince may sit in it to eat bread before the LORD; he shall enter by way of the vestibule of the gate, and shall go out by the same way." The "Golden Gate" was located in the East wall of Jerusalem; it was one of eleven entrance gates into the city. Notice in the below picture that this gate is sealed shut. It was sealed up in the 16th century A.D. The East gate was walled up by the Ottoman Turks in 1530 A.D. Notice also the cemetery that has been planted in front of it. Many believe this was done to prevent the entrance of the Jewish Messiah through that gate as was foretold by known Old Testament prophecies. However, Ezekiel prophesied the shutting of this gate itself around 600 B.C. -- that it would be shut "because the LORD (Jehovah or Yahweh), the God of Israel, hath entered in by it, therefore it shall be shut."
