Food Additives – regulatory framework
Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008 on food additives Legislation on FA Fully harmonised, except for national provisions of Denmark on the addition of nitrite to certain meat products: Commission decisions 2008/448/EC, 2010/561/EU and 2015/826/EU,

Desk Study on the Implementation of Directive 2006/52/EC
Conclusion: Although the preservation of meat products depends on a complex interaction between a number of factors including not only nitrites but also salt, pH and temperature control, and considering that in most MS nitrites are usually added to meat products at levels lower than the maximum permitted levels, it should be further explored the possibility to review the current maximum levels of nitrites.

Study on the use of nitrites
Study was requested by the European Commission A survey with EU meat industry about the use and use levels of nitrite, Literature research on effect on colour, taste and preservation, effect on Clostridium botulinum and formation of nitrosamines, The organisation of a workshop with experts, A report on the possibility to review the current maximum levels, taking into account the conclusions of the first three points. Report will be finalised by end 2015

Established by Commission Regulation (EU) No 257/2010 All additives authorised before 20 January 2009 Colours completed by Sweeteners completed by All other additives completed by Nitrites by , however postponed to first half 2016 to coordinate with European Commission studie

FVO audits and follow-up
Series of missions on the use of additives in meat processing including controls on blending, distribution, import labelling with special attention on use of nitrites. (CZ, DE, HU, NL, DK and PL ) Status has been changed from "audit" to "fact-finding" missions, Meeting of the Working group on general application of Regulation (EC) No 882/2004 on Food Additives and Smoked Flavouring Possibility for coordinated action on nitrite starting 2016
