5 Unit 1 Various Ways of Greeting (I)
English Way: “Hello!” “Hi!” ; More formal: “How do you do?” said with a hand shake; “How are you?” not a question French Way: Exchange kisses Chinese Way: Have you eaten? Chinese and Japanese Way: exchange name cards with both hands, and read carefully; westerners don’t.

Handshake: British – used in first meeting or after a long period of not meeting; German – more vigorous, friends and colleagues see each other frequently; Dutch – accompanied by saying their names, also to say goodbye. Chinese – greeting and goodbye. Hugs: most westerners.

The Thai wai: pressing the palms of both hands together at about chest height, with the fingers stretch upwards; Delicate variations: between equals who don’t know each other’s rank; a person of inferior rank to show respect to a superior; a person of even a lower rank to one of much higher rank; a person of superior rank to return the wai of a person of lower rank; No wai.

Use appropriate expressions to complete the conversation on p5 Practice reading the conversation (read it through at least twice, changing roles each time)

Participation Activity on P10: assign the topics from a) to f) to groups of students in 3 or 4, give them 10 minutes to discuss how they feel about the choice and how the visitors may feel. Ask a student from each group to report the discussion result so the whole class can share the information
