Bacteria Protists Viruses Parasites Cellular Structure Appearance Shapes Size Comparison Reproduction Rate of Reproduction Helpful or Harmful Warm up Write a theory about the difference between a living thing and a nonliving thing. Describe how you would test your theory. Homework: Page 130 Page 129 1
2
World of Microbes – Activity # 45
Protist Bacteria Virus What are they? How do they look? Size Comparison How do they reproduce? How are they observed? Considered a microbe? Why or Why not? Are they helpful or harmful? Explain why you think so.
3
Bacteria Characterisics Reproduction No nucleus (prokaryotes)
Unicellular 3 main shapes Spiral (also known as Spirillum) Rod (Bacillus) Round (Coccus) Helpful Decomposers of dead and decaying organisms Used to make yogurt Binary fission Asexual = offsprings’ genetic info. is identical to the parent’s (clone)
4
Bacteria Diseases Streptococcus – causes strep throat
Lyme Disease caused by Spirilla E. Coli – Causes food poisoning
5
Protists Characteristics Usually single-celled moist environment
Grouped by how they move and get food Reproduction Binary fission (asexual), budding (asexual) Plant-like Protist called Volvox Animal-like Protist called Paramecium Animal-like Protist called Amoeba Plant-like Euglena
6
Protist Examples Move with a whip like tail called flagella Euglena
Flagellates Psudopodia Ciliates Move with a whip like tail called flagella Euglena Plant-like Move with tiny hairs called cilia Cilia help capture food Paramecium feeding (animal-like) Move with false feed called psudopods Disease causer – Ameoba causing Dysentery
7
Fungi Characteristics Act as decomposers and absorbs nutrients
Help to break down dead organisms Reproduction Mostly asexual spores (many germinate with moisture) but some sexual (similar to fertilization) spore dispersal
8
Fungi 3 groups: mushrooms, molds, yeasts
Not all are bad! Disease Causing 3 groups: mushrooms, molds, yeasts Yeast (single celled) is used to make bread Penicillin (antibiotic) kills bacteria Athlete’s Foot is a parasitic fungal infection caused by causes scaling, flaking, and itch of affected areas
9
Parasites Characteristics a harmful relationship to the host
Reproduction depends on the parasite (asexual or sexual)
10
Parasites Harmful by definition Tapeworms - from uncooked meat Fleas
Good Examples Disease Causing Harmful by definition Tapeworms - from uncooked meat Fleas Bed bugs - suck blood from sleeping victims
11
VIRUSES Characteristics NOT living organisms
Needs a host cell to reproduce.
12
VIRUSES Attachment Injection Production Assembly Release Reproduction
Requires a host cell to make new viruses 5 steps to virus multiplication: Attachment Injection Production Assembly Release
13
VIRUSES West Nile virus Influenza
Helpful Virus Examples Bad Examples Used to transfer helpful genes into cells – gene therapy West Nile virus Influenza
