1 Classifying Living Things
5th Grade Science

2 Classification The act of grouping things by using a set of rules is called classification. Why classify? To organize living things so they can be studied and discussed

3 5 Kingdoms A Kingdom is the largest group into which living things can be classified. 1) Animals: get their food from other things 2) Plants: make their own food

4 5 Kingdoms Con’t. 3) Fungi: plant like, but can’t make their own food. Mushrooms 4) Protists: one celled organism with a nucleus 5) Monerans: one celled organism without a nucleus

5 Smaller Groups Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species
Genus and species Scientific name: Ursa arctos= brown bear Homo sapien= human

6 Animals with a backbone
Vertebrates are animals that have a backbone

7 5 Groups of Vertebrates 1) Mammals: have hair and produce milk for their young. Cats and dogs 2) Reptiles: have scales, dry skin and lay eggs. Lizards, turtles, snakes

8 Vertebrates continued
3) Amphibians: have moist skin and no scale. They begin life in water and live on land. Frogs and salamanders. 4) Fish: live entire life in water and have gills, and have scales

9 Vertebrates continued
5) Birds: have feathers, lay eggs, and most can fly. Robins, chickens, parrots.

10 Skeleton: The structure that protects and supports an organism
Endoskeleton: a skeleton made of bone and cartilage that you and other vertebrate animals have. Exoskeleton: a hard outer covering that invertebrates have insects and shrimp for example. What kind of skeleton is this?

11 Body heat regulation Cold-blooded: the organisms’ body temperature is regulated by the outside temperature. Amphibians, fish, and reptiles Warm-blooded: the organisms’ body temperature is regulated by the body to maintain or keep a constant temperature. Mammals and birds

12 Animals without a backbone
Invertebrates: are animals without a backbone. Insects Spiders Shrimp Clams Oysters starfish

13 Predator: an animal that hunts others
Prey: an animal hunted or caught for food Carnivore: meat eater Herbivore: plant eater Omnivore: eats both plants and meat Which one is what type of eater?

14 Plants Vascular plants: have tubes that can be found in roots, stems, and leaves. The tubes carry water and nutrients throughout the plant. Example: trees, bushes, flowers

15 Plants continued Nonvascular plants: don’t have tubes to carry water and nutrients throughout the plant. Water and nutrients have to pass from cell to cell. Have to live in shady damp places. Example: moss
