ESTABLISHING NURTURING DIAPERING AND DRESSING ROUTINE
For children, being able to do things for themselves is a big part of their desire to achieve autonomy and independence. The goal of nurturing routines is to allow children to develop their autonomy at the same time they learn to cooperate. Nurturing routines involve a partnership. That’s where the cooperation comes in, teaching children to cooperate and to view nurturing routines as a partnership is a primary goal to the success of nurturing routines working. IMPORTANT! Let your children have input into what they wear for the day Allow children to do the things they can do by themselves without any help from you Assist your children in getting dressed but allow them to still have the lead Take the lead in assisting your children in getting dressed by doing the things they are incapable of doing Observe your children to see what they’re capable of doing. Not wanting to do everything for a child will be difficult for some. Sometimes it’s the need to express “I know more” or “I’m in charge” or “I don’t have time.” Remember, the goal here is to help children develop autonomy 149, 151, 155, 157

ESTABLISHING NURTURING FEEDING TIME ROUTINE; FEEDING YOUR CHILDREN NUTRITIOUS FOODS
Some notes about feeding routines.. We want babies to know when they’ve had enough to eat Feeding times teach babies a lot about themselves Babies lose weight immediately after birth and gain back lost pounds in 2-3 days Around one year, babies begin to be choosy Teething usually takes away a child’s appetite Around one year old, children often lose their interest in food because they’re too busy Steps in Establishing a Nurturing Feeding Time Provide a comfortable eating environment Allow your child the opportunity to reject food Reinforce personal choice in eating Try to get children to think of food as something they want, not something they need to reject Encourage your child to begin to feed himself with a spoon around 9-10 months Don’t worry about table manners Praise your child 149, 151, 155, 157

ESTABLISHING A NURTURING BATH TIME ROUTINE
WHY IS BATH TIME A BAD TIME? Baths come at the end of the day when parents and children are anxious Bed time usually follows bath time and a lot of children don’t like going to bed Bath time in some families is a chore, not fun Bath time is an on-again, off- again activity, which only tends to increase anxiety Some children may have had a bad experience during a bath and associate all bath times with the bad experience HOW TO MAKE BATH TIME FUN. . . Make “tubby time” part of a daily routine Encourage your child to play in the tub Make it sound like more fun Let your child help in preparing the bath

Paying attention to crying children will spoil them Fact: Children become spoiled through inconsistent rules and feelings of insecurity Fact or Myth? Children who occasionally sleep in their parents’ bed will never want to leave. Fact: Wanting to sleep with mom and dad is probably a need for the children to feel secure. When feelings of security are felt, the need for sleeping with mom and dad is lessened.

Praise Time! “You fall, you rise, you make mistakes, you live, you learn. You’re human, not perfect. You’ve been hurt, but you’re alive. Think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive – to breathe, to think, to enjoy, and to chase the things you love. Sometimes there is sadness in our journey, but there is also lots of beauty. You must keep putting one foot in front of the other even when we hurt, for we will never know what is waiting for us just around the bend. -unknown
