Brought together the NAACP, SCLC, and SNCC. Took place August 28, 1963 More then 200,000 involved Very peaceful and festive Main rally was at the Lincoln Memorial MLK gave his “I have a dream speech” The SNCC wanted a more militant protest, but it never happened

Three weeks after March Bomb explodes at Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham SCLC’s headquarters Four African American girls were killed Two months later JFK assassinated LBJ threw his support behind the civil rights movement

5 Congress Continued Civil Rights bill faced opposition in Congress
In the Senate, it faced a filibuster Eventually passed and signed into law Civil Rights Act of 1964 Banned segregation in public accommodations Federal government to intervene in public schools Justice Department could prosecute anyone who violated civil rights Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) created Could not discriminate on the basis of race, color, sex, or national origin
