2
How we used to deploy Windows
Create ‘gold’ image(s) What is a gold image? RTM release of an operating system Applications Updates Settings
3
How we used to deploy Windows
Wipe-and-load approach Backup user state data Deploy image Add drivers/applications Restore user state data Usually performed in a task sequence via MDT or SCCM
4
Windows 10 is different. Think different.
5
Windows 10 Scenarios In-Place upgrade (older OS)
Move from Windows 7/8.1 to Windows 10 Preserves data, apps and settings Recommended approach to get Windows 10 onto a device In-place update (older build) Keep topping up builds with feature updates No need to deploy new xxxx builds using an image Recommended approach once Windows 10 is on a device Provisioning Designed for configuring new hardware You can change Windows OS edition. E.g. Home>Enterprise Deploy apps Deploy settings Create provisioning packages in WICD
6
In-Place Upgrade (older OS)
Are you serious?! Windows 7 / Windows 8.x to Windows 10 supported Application compatibility is basically the same The work you did getting applications working on Windows 7+ pays out today
7
Prepare NOW Check hardware and software compatibility
Be aware of gotchas. E.g. BIOS>UEFI E.g. x86 > x64 Trial it – you may be pleasantly surprised
8
In-Place Update (older build)
Keep up to date with ‘feature updates’ (previously known as ‘upgrades’) No need for wipe and load Investigate blockers: e.g. vendor support 300m+ people can’t be wrong!
9
Packages Can be deployed via email, USB, file server
Files are small! <10KB Can include applications – classic or UWP
10
Review of servicing options
Windows Insider* Current Branch (CB) Current Branch For Business (CBB) Long Term Servicing Branch (LTSB) *not intended for production use
11
Current Branch for Business
Microsoft Ignite 2016 6/17/2018 6:12 AM Windows 10 Servicing Engineering builds Broad Microsoft internal validation Microsoft Insider Preview Branch Current Branch Current Branch for Business Hundreds of millions Several Million 10’s of thousands Users Time 4 to 6 months 4 months 6 months © 2016 Microsoft Corporation. Servicing Tool Choices
Windows Update Default setting, configurable in GPO/Settings app Uses Windows Update for delivery Window Update for Business Build 1511 – defer feature updates 8 months, quality updates 1 month Build 1607 – defer feature updates 6 months, quality updates 1 month Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) / System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) On-premises services used to control update release and minimize bandwidth Microsoft Intune Cloud based service used to control update release.
13
Provisioning Create packages (.ppkg files)
Not suitable for large organizations that use SCCM or MDT Typical scenarios BYOD CYOD Installation with a .WIM file
14
Windows ICD Provisioning Packages

Demo: Using Windows ICD

Adding a package
17
Why wipe and load doesn’t it make sense
Wipe and load is still a valid approach Your servicing model dictates your build ‘refresh’ to devices Let’s assume we are using CBB servicing Do you really want to create new images every few months, and deploy with wipe and load?
18
Call to action Review which scenarios apply to you
Test in-place upgrades from earlier Windows versions Investigate blockers that might impact servicing cycles Create CBB deployment rings for on-going test and deployment of feature updates
