1 Formation of the Solar System
Billions of years ago…

2 After the Big Bang Scientists believe that the solar system was formed when a cloud of gas and dust in space began to spin and collapse due to its increasing gravity. This cloud of gas and dust in space is called a nebula Just like a dancer that spins faster as she pulls in her arms, the cloud began to spin as it collapsed. Eventually, the cloud grew hotter and denser in the center, with a disk of gas and dust surrounding it that was hot in the center but cool at the edges.

3 A Star is Born In the center of the nebula where it is most dense (where most of the matter is crushed into one place by gravity) a spark flares up in the dense gases A ball of fire is let loose A sun is born It is now a Solar Nebula ,a space cloud with a sun in the middle

4 Planetesimals As the disk spun it got thinner and thinner, particles began to stick together and form clumps. Some clumps got bigger, as particles and small clumps stuck to them, eventually forming planetesimals As the small objects collided, planets and moons were formed

5 Terrestrial Planets Near the center of the cloud, where planets like Earth formed, only rocky material could stand the great heat.

6 Giant Gas Planets Icy matter settled in the outer regions of the disk, where the giant planets like Jupiter formed.

7 Different temperatures formed different planets

8 Notes Nebula- cloud of gas and dust in space.
Solar Nebula- space cloud with a newly formed sun. Planetesimals- cluster of gases and dust that form rocky planets (terrestrial) near the sun and gas giants in the colder regions away from the sun. Planets- (Greek planētes, “wanderers”), any body (except a comet, meteoroid, or satellite) revolving in an orbit around the Sun or around some other star.

9 Draw, Label, and Describe
Solar System Formation (3 Pictures / 1 page each picture) a) nebula, b) solar nebula and planetesimals, and c) Sun and 8 planets 4 facts about each planet / Title of Poster
