Plate Tectonics 10/06/15 7-3 pgs IN: What force, do you suppose causes the plates to move?
2
Sea-Flooring Spreading
3
Convection Hot material deep within the Earth rises while cooler material near the surface sinks. This is what causes tectonic plates to move around.
4
Convection
5
Ridge Push / Slab Pull
6
Ridge Push The process by which an oceanic plate slides down the lithosphere- asthenosphere boundary.
7
Slab Pull The process by which the edge of the oceanic plate sinks and pulls the rest of the tectonic plate with it.
8
Plate Tectonics The theory that the Earth’s lithosphere is divided into tectonic plates that move around on top of the athenosphere.
9
Tectonic Plate Boundaries
There are 3 main types. Convergent boundaries Divergent boundaries Transform boundaries
10
Convergent Boundaries
Collide When two tectonic plates push into one another.
11
Convergent Boundaries
3 types: Continental/Continental Continental/Oceanic Oceanic/Oceanic
12
Continental/Continental
Forms mountains
13
Continental/Continental
Forms mountains
14
Continental/Oceanic Forms land volcanoes
15
Oceanic/Oceanic Forms ocean volcanoes and islands
16
Subduction Zones The region where oceanic plates sink down into the asthenosphere.
18
Divergent Boundaries Divide
When two tectonic plates move away from one another.
19
Divergent Boundary Remember sea-floor spreading?
20
Transform Boundaries Slide
When two tectonic plates slide past each other horizontally.
21
Transform Boundary Produce Earthquakes! San Andreas Fault
22
Tracking Motion GPS satellites
23
OUT: When convection takes place in the mantle, why does cooler material sink, while warmer material rises?
