7.2 Equations with Rational Numbers
2
Equations with Fractions
Determine the Least Common Denominator for all the fractions To eliminate the fractions, MULTIPLY BOTH SIDES of the equation by the least common denominator. Simplify the fractions Solve equation using your inverse operations.
3
See Example from book on page 203
7/10 n + 3/2 = 3/5 n + 2
4
Your Turn # 3 1/7 k – 6 = 3/7 k + 4
5
Your Turn # 4 5/6 y + 1 = -1/2 y + 1/4
6
Equations with Decimals
Determine the highest decimal value ( tenths, 100ths, ??) To ELIMINATE all decimals, MULTIPLY BOTH sides by either 10, 100, 1000. Once eliminated, begin solving using inverse operations.
7
Example 3 0.2 r = 0.5r
8
Example 4 2.25 r + 5 = 13.5r +14
9
Example 5 Members of the Wide Water Club pay $105 per summer season, plus $9.5 each time they rent a boat. Nonmembers must pay $14.75 each time they rent a boat. How many times would a member and a nonmember have to rent a boat in order to pay the same amount?
