TRAPPERS The key to persuasive writing

2 Imagine this….

3 You are asked to answer the following question:
Write a letter to a national broadsheet newspaper FOR or AGAINST the use of Facebook in schools. First you would need to do some thinking about the pros and cons..

4 REASONS FOR REASONS AGAINST
Write a letter to a national broadsheet newspaper FOR or AGAINST the use of Facebook in schools.

5 Now you need to think about how you will structure your article.

6 Structuring an argument
Option 1 Introduction Other side (1,2,3) Why those reasons are wrong My reasons (1,2,3) Conclusion Option 2 Introduction My side (1,2,3 reasons) Other side (1,2,3 reasons) Why my reasons outweigh their reasons Conclusion

7 Now...time to TRAP your audience into agreeing with your side!

8 T = List of Three Facebook is a method of communication, socialisation and entertainment.

9 R = Rhetorical Question
Are there any possible arguments in favour of using Facebook in today’s classroom?

10 A = Adjectives and Adverbs
Are there any possible, realistic arguments in favour of effectively using Facebook in today’s modern classroom?

11 P = Personal Anecdote Ms Hensley, a Head of English at a grammar school, believes that using Facebook in the classroom could result in engaging students in her lessons. She has developed groups for each one of her classes and uses these to communicate resources and extension activities. Students can be encouraged to use true personal anecdotes, or make up realistic ones.

12 P = Polls or Statistics There are more than 800 million active users of Facebook. 50% of these log on to the site twice a day. Again, students can be encouraged to use true statistics, or make up realistic ones.

13 E= Emotive Language The dangers of Facebook are ever present, lurking behind what one assumes is a genuine user. Simply answering yes to a friend request could result in being a victim of a stalker or worse.

14 R= Repetition The idea of using Facebook in the classroom is seen as ridiculous by some teachers. Ridiculous.

15 S= Short, dramatic sentence
The idea of using Facebook in the classroom is seen as ridiculous by some teachers. Ridiculous.
