10: Excellent 8½ - 9½: Very good 7 - 8: Good 5 - 6½: Satisfactory 2½ - 4½: Deficient ½ - 2: Unsatisfactory 0: Completely Failed
There are 7 judges who give a score between 0 and 10.
The top 2 scores and the bottom 2 scores are not counted.
The three middle scores are
multiplied by a “Degree of Difficulty” and
added together to give a score for the dive.

Select the appropriate results tables and/ or number line to give students. Tables are differentiated by the number of place values used.
Scores below 395 not qualifying = author’s licence 

6. These questions could really be used for Year 2 to Year 7 depending on the level of facilitation that the teacher gives to the discussion.
Teaching ideas:
The idea behind this activity is to promote justification and reasoning, and the potential for students to use numbers to support their reasoning.
Are you more successful if you get more medals overall or if you win more gold? (This is the order as they appear on the Rio2016 website). Give students the opportunity to discuss their thinking. Perfect opportunity to demonstrate that there could be more than one answer depending on your perspective.
For Tier 3: Have students allocate points for each medal. How did they decide? For example is a gold worth 1 point more than a silver or worth double the points.
EG points could be allocated 3,2,1 or 4, 2, 1 ? What other suggestions do students have? Can they come up with a number sentence to calculate the points earned?
