RD51 The prime roles of our community:
Study basic detector physics (theory, experiment) Conceive new detector concepts (& readout) Build detector systems for experiments (“the real life”) Educate the younger generation Disseminate new detector technologies Gas-avalanche Detectors: A fascinating, ever-growing field With many multidisciplinary applications Far behind Particle Physics!

OLD GOOD WIRE CHAMBERS - GAIN RESOLUTION

Usual “Problems” Discharge limits (dynamic range) resistive electrodes Ion backflow blocking (TPC, RICH) cascades, staggered holes, graphene coatings Photon feedback (noble gases) cascades, staggered holes Resolutions (physical limits, readout) Rate capability (space charge, charge removal) Large-area detectors (production; industrialization) Readout electronics

Position resolutions needed: 10s microns - to - centimeters!
Applications Tracking in HEP TPC Calorimetry (DHCAL) Single-photon (UV, visible) imaging (RICH) Neutron & x-ray imaging Cryogenic T (UV detectors, electron detectors) Nuclear Physics Homeland security etc 50mm Position resolutions needed: 10s microns - to - centimeters!

A 2-THGEM and MicroMegas GPM with position sensitive pad readout
2-THGEM with RPWELL with position sensitive pad readout A triple THGEM GPM with position sensitive pad readout

Summary of summary… Molto-Interesting Conference
Good variety of talks, posters & reviews Focused on HEP…though many other fascinating applications! I limited myself to some of the topics presented and discussed others I find important sLHC & (may be) ILC are still far - but B-factories, Nucl.Phys., RHI, SR, neutron sources, space & ground astro-activities, medical etc – are good “customers”! Room for good R&D for training and motivating the younger generation! Amos Breskin – Vienna 2010

Gaseous Photo-Multipliers (GPMs) for future dark matter searches
ERDAL GPMs WIS R&D on GPMs for future multi-ton LXe TPCs for dark matter searches (within DARWIN) Aim for 4π coverage – not practical with PMTs (cost, bulkiness) or SiPMs (dark count rate) Successful demonstration of 4” cryogenic triple-THGEM GPM with reflective CsI coupled to dual phase LXe TPC: (arXiv: ) - Stable gain ~ 105 Large dynamic range: 1 – O(103) photoelectrons 1 ns timing (~ 200 PEs) Expected PDE ~15% after optimization 4” triple-THGEM GPM Also: on-going R&D on n/γ imaging with pixilated readout (arXiv: ) CsI coated
