1 Year 1 Phonics Screening

2 What is phonics? One way that children are taught to read is by breaking down words into separate sounds or ‘phonemes’. They are then taught how to blend these sounds together to read the whole word. Children have a 20 minute phonics lesson each day and they are encouraged to use these strategies to read and write in other lessons. There are around 40 different sounds.

3 This year in KS1 and Reception we have been using photo cards to help the children to have a “hook” to remember what the sounds are. All the classes use the same pictures. We have a handout for you. It is also important that they recognise the sounds when they are not accompanied by a picture. (linked to on the Year1 page on the DPS website)

4 Why are the children being screened?
Every Year 1 child in the country will be taking the phonics screening check in the same week in June. This ‘midpoint check’ will ensure that we have a clear understanding of what the children need to learn in year 2 and identify if they will need extra support. At Downton we pride ourselves in our phonics teaching and the children who need extra help have already been working in small groups with Mrs Pollard and Mrs Dunlop as part of ELS.

5 What will the children be expected to do?
The check is very similar to tasks the children already complete during phonics lessons. Children will be asked to ‘sound out’ a word and blend the sounds together.eg d-o-g - dog The focus of the check is to see which sounds the children know and therefore the children will be asked to read 20 real words and 20 made up ‘nonsense’ words.

8 When will the screening take place?
The screening will take place in June, we will inform you of the date in Term 5. The children cannot retake the test at any other time so it is very important your child is in school during this week. The check has been designed so that children of all abilities will be able to take part. We will share the results with you as soon as we get them back from the Department for Education who set the pass mark each year and then verify the results. Please be reassured that if they do not pass it does not mean they are not a successful reader, it just means that their phonic knowledge is not yet fully developed, and we will work with them on this in school. Please try not to compare your child with other children – they are all unique! 

9 Who will complete the check?
The children will complete the check one at a time in a quiet area of the school. The class teacher will conduct all of the screening checks with the children. The screening will only take 5-10mins with each child.

10 How can you help? Digraph- 2 letters making one sound cow
Encourage your child to ‘sound out’ when reading or writing. Focusing particularly on spotting more unusual sound patterns. Eg Digraph- 2 letters making one sound cow Trigraphs- 3 letters making one sound night Split digraphs (The tricky ones!)- 2 vowels with a consonant in between. Use to be known as the magic e! spine - i_e

11 How can you help? http://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/BuriedTreasure2.html
Practise reading the sounds from the website– you could cut them up like flashcards… We have already attached the sounds to some children’s reading diaries. Write words containing the sounds for your child to practise reading. Children can practise their phonics by playing games online. The children particularly like ‘Buried Treasure’

12 How can you help? REMEMBER: Phonics is not the only thing needed to become a fluent reader. Please continue to read with your child each night and encourage them to: Sound out Re-read to check it makes sense. Use pictures for clues. Ask questions about the book. And most importantly ENJOY READING!
