Born April 27, 1822 in Point Pleasant, Ohio Hiram Ulysses Grant Nomination to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point (Confused with mother’s maiden name Simpson) Died on July 23, 1885 in Mount McGregor, New York Throat Cancer (Chewing on Cigars / Gifts (20,000))

Graduated from U.S. Military Academy West Point in New York Did not enjoy school Described his 4 years there as “interminable” or (Never Ending) Born Methodist, but was not religious. He attended church services (mainly to please his wife, Julia)

5 Military Career Lieutenant in the Mexican American War
After the war Grant served at various posts especially in the Pacific Northwest; he retired from the service in 1854 Grant trained Union military recruits and was promoted to Colonel in June 1861 Grant was the only general during the Civil War who received the surrender of three Confederate armies. Served until 1869 and retired as General of the Armed Forces Hemophobic (Charred Meat)

7 Fun Facts Ulysses Grant was the first president to have both his parents living as he entered office. As president, Grant received a speeding ticket while riding his horse too fast through the streets of D.C. After retiring, Grant invested in a brokerage firm that went bankrupt, costing him his life savings. Grant spent the rest of his days writing his personal memoirs which were published after his death and turned out to be a huge financial success
