SCHOOL Libraries are important
“What a school thinks about its library is a measure of what it thinks about education.” --Harold Howe former U.S. Commissioner of Education
3
SCHOOL LIBRARIES ARE IMPORTANT
Reading is a window to the world. Reading is a foundational skill for learning, personal growth, and enjoyment. The degree to which students can read and understand text in all formats (e.g., picture, video, print) and all contexts is a key indicator of success in school and in life. {American Association of School Librarians (AASL), Standards for the 21st Century Learner}
4
SCHOOL Libraries are important
The school library media program supports and strengthens the curriculum, bridges the digital divide, and puts state and national standards into action. The school library media specialist encourages reading for learning, reading for pleasure, and reading for life. (Georgia Department of Education)
5
SCHOOL Libraries are important
The school library media specialist is a teacher, an instructional partner, an informational specialist, and a school library media program administrator. School library media specialists directly affect student achievement by collaborating and planning with teachers, teaching information literacy, designing assessment procedures, and providing supplemental curriculum material. (Georgia Department of Education)
6
Studies across states Test scores improve in schools
which have a school library staffed by a licensed library media specialist and assisted by adequate staff, in which the library has a viable collection and proper funding, in which the library media specialist collaborates with teachers, teaches information literacy skills, provides in-service for teachers in information technology, in which library have online resources
7
Studies Across States Dr. James C. Baughman says, school libraries are the foundation for resource-based teaching. Achieving good Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) scores depends on the combination of successful administrative leadership, team building for the implementation of the curriculum, excellence in teaching, and strong school library resources in every school.
8
STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT AT A GLANCE
The statistics support the necessity for a school library that is properly funded and managed by a qualified media specialist.
9
Collaboration Works Teachers were three times more likely to rate their literacy teaching as excellent when they collaborated with librarians. Student test scores were higher the more time librarians worked cooperatively with classroom teachers, the more they taught information literacy independently, and the more they provided in-service training to teachers.
10
COLLABORATION WORKS School librarians and teachers make a strong instructional team combining their knowledge of pedagogy, resources, and technology to meet the specific needs of each student.
