1 Get out your notebook and label the page “Plant Survival”
Get out your notebook and label the page “Plant Survival”. Then discuss the following questions with your neighbors: What might kill a plant? What helps a plant survive? *Test is Tuesday December 20th – (if you want be here you need to take it before you leave)

2 Changes in environmental conditions can affect the survival of individual organisms and entire species. Plants have mechanisms that enable them to respond to their environment. Plants grow, reproduce, and shift the position of their roots, stems and leaves in response to environmental conditions such as gravity, sunlight, temperature and day length

3 TROPISMS AND OTHER RESPONSES AND ADAPTATIONS HELP PLANTS SURVIVE.

4 DEFINITION Tropism: bending toward or away from a stimulus “Trop”
the Greek word for turning “ism” means the act of

5 “trop” turning “ISM” THE ACT OF + = “trop” turning “ism” the act of

6 Flash = Stimulus Blink = Response
Response and Stimulus Anything in the environment that produces a response is called a stimulus. Example: A camera’s flash goes off… Your eyes blink… Flash = Stimulus Blink = Response

7 Three Types of Tropisms
HYDROTROPISM: response to water Example: a plant’s roots grow towards a water source

8 Three Types of Tropisms
GRAVITROPISM: response to gravity Example: a plant’s roots go down

9 Three Types of Tropisms
PHOTOTROPISM: response to light Example: a plant’s stem bends toward the sun

10 Tropism Time Lapse Compliation

11 Auxins Plants chemicals that help the plant grow
Auxins cause the plant to bend during all kinds of tropisms When one side of the plant is exposed to light, the auxins move to the other side and down. Cells then grow, which makes the plant bend.

12 Dormancy Dormancy is a period of inactivity in a mature seed prior to germination seed remains dormant until conditions are favorable for growth and development of the new plant.

16 Seed Dispersal Handout and Article
Video to watch after reading article:

17 Please get out your seed dispersal sheet from yesterday
Please get out your seed dispersal sheet from yesterday. We will begin by watching the accompanying video. Also, grab the sheet from the desk and begin reading over your lab for today.

18 Take the next couple of minutes to work on your lab sheet from yesterday. Then we will be going to the computer lab. Bring all of your stuff.

19 Test tomorrow! Grab the study guide from the desk and begin looking over the questions. Put a star by the questions you do not know the answer to

20 Test day! Clear everything off of your desk except a pencil.
Grab a testing divider Have something to do after testing, like reading a book
