1 Smart Columbus Overview
August 14, 2017 By now you know the City of Columbus won the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) $40 million Smart City Challenge in June, 2016 after competing against 77 cities nationwide. Columbus was also awarded a $10 million grant from the Paul G. Allen’s Vulcan Inc . to accelerate the transition to an electrified, low-emissions transportation system. Through the leadership of Mayor Andrew Ginther and the Columbus Partnership, local businesses and organizations have also committed at least $365 million to an Acceleration Fund designed to enhance and sustain the Smart Columbus initiative. We call this Smart Columbus. But smart is just the start.

2 NATIONAL PARTNERS USDOT brought these partners to the table.

3 LOCAL PARTNERS But we couldn’t have won the Smart City Challenge and we won’t be successful without the help of all of our local partners. Move to next steps/close slides or use Vulcan slides.

4 TIMELINE The first year of the grant was spent getting organized, reaching out to potential customers, partners and stakeholders, and getting system engineering underway for all 15 projects. This system engineering phase will extend well into The first deployments will start to occur late in is when you’ll see most of the projects up and running. We will share lessons learned in year four, 2020. At every step of the process we are collecting data so we can document our results.

There are 15 USDOT projects in all. I will walk through them all, but you will see they fall into two categories: Enabling technologies and districts. We have a number of working groups to tap local and national experts in all of these areas, and we are also reaching out to specific user groups and stakeholders to help shape these projects. 15 USDOT PROJECTS

8 DISTRICTS The remaining USDOT projects fall within four districts: residential, commercial, downtown and logistics.

15 Columbus’ urban core is thriving
Columbus’ urban core is thriving. With growth comes the opportunity to meet demand head on and transform the way things are done. The Downtown District is home to projects that serve as a prototype for other cities consistently balancing residential, commercial and visitor traffic.
