How can YOU help? Discuss what they have learnt in their English lesson that day; (Skill: recalling key information.) Provide reading materials- Newspapers, novels from 19th, 20th and 21st century; ask them to tell you what they have read; (Skill: Synthesising key information.) Encourage them to read around a topic; (Skill: identifying similarities/ differences; developing comparative/ critical skills.) Teach them the importance of taking initiative, learning for themselves, extending the learning from the classroom to the wider world. (Skill: becoming reflective and critical individuals.)

Expose them to a range of texts by Shakespeare and Charles Dickens; Re-read A Christmas Carol; Watch different versions of ‘Macbeth’ in performance; Generate discussions around the themes and ideas in Macbeth and A Christmas Carol; Research around Jacobean era and Victorian England; Visit to the Globe theatre;
