Welcome Back to AP English Language and Composition!
Get all 3 handouts at the door. Take out some paper and a writing utensil. If you have your notebook and agreement for me to check/collect, put them on your desk (they’re due Monday!) **If you weren’t here Tuesday, please let me know.

Homework – AP (B Day) Every day: Bring copy of Joy Luck Club (if you have one). By Thurs midnight: sign up for Vocabulary Builder and master 10 words on number2.com Mon 8/21 - Joy Luck Club Test (basic comprehension, MC) By Mon 8/21: Get supplies: notebook (for a grade) binder or folder w/ 3 tabs (vocab, handouts, graded work) highlighters Get parents to view syllabus and sign agreement. Return signed agreement for a grade.

Today – Argumentative Essay (in- class); review rubrics and vocab builder Mon 8/21 – JLC Test (MC), lesson on close reading of theme Wed 8/23 – Continue theme; start purpose lesson Fri 8/25 – Continue purpose **New material starting 8/29. Make sure you have the textbook.

Vocab Builder on number2.com
SIGN UP and MASTER 10 words by THURS midnight. You need to master 100 words per quarter (for quarters 1-3, quarter 4 is extra credit) Use instructions to sign up and do activities.

Vocab Tracking Form File in your binder.
Use the tracking form to help you incorporate new words in your essays and classwork (starting in quarter 2) You will be required to use these words (as part of your grade) in essays and on homework and classwork.

Essay Expectations Do independently! No help from me or others, no dictionaries, phones, etc. 4-5 paragraphs, planning optional Argumentative (Persuasive) CONVINCING! Do NOT misspell words from the quote or prompt. Answer the prompt. If off-topic, it’s a zero. You will be allowed to revise for a higher score (1-5 only). Use thesis and topic sentences to help you organize your argument. Use evidence from your personal experience, current events, history, etc.

Rubric and Grading Revisions will be allowed if you don’t finish on time or if you are unhappy with your score. 6-9 = 50/50 A+ 3-5 = 43/50 B 1-2 = 38/50 C Unscorable = 0/50 (no essay or completely off-topic) Revisions allowed for 1-5 only

Argumentative Essay Prompt
“Prejudice is a burden that confuses the past, threatens the future and renders the present inaccessible.” – Maya Angelou In a well-organized essay (4-5 paragraphs), examine the extent to which Angelou’s claim about the danger of prejudice is true or relevant today.
