Target Preparation ISIS requirement of two complete systems Target actuator Support Control system Cooling circuit Monitoring Huge pressure on overloaded target team! Aim for two complete systems for January. Priority for parts to be installed inside ISIS (even if delay to second “demonstrator” system means we can’t operate it immediately ISIS comes on). Thanks for help from others with parts of system – see below. Chris Booth University of Sheffield

Not a good 2 weeks for the target!
1) Short circuit discovered between coil and cooling jacket. Not clear if this is a new problem(!) Actuator had done ~8M operations. Now dismantled and examined. No sign of wear on insulation. Coil (1 of 24) replaced and actuator reassembled. New actuator will go in ISIS. More thorough examination and testing of insulation to be performed before assembly. 2) Daresbury power supply brought to Sheffield for tests. Incorrect drive of coils (not seen with dummy load) damaged shaft. Subsequent operation led to destruction of DLC coatings on both shaft & lower bearing. PSU back at DL. Problem not really understood. Control simulator to be produced by Paul S., to investigate problem. (Yet more work for him instead of getting second electronics ready.) Increased support from Daresbury Lab
Steve York to take on oversight of mechanical ordering and assembly. DL electronics to produce some circuit boards, crates & interconnecting cables (for second system). Some mechanical parts to be manufactured in DL workshop, including welded seals of actuator flanges. Work continues on PSU, stepper motor controls, interlocks. Several recent meetings with RAL & DL. Two shafts currently being machined at Oxford, for subsequent DLC coating. Chris Booth University of Sheffield

Planning for shutdown progressing:-
Installation of fibres and cables through to synchrotron vault. Old target to be removed at beginning of January, after cool-down). Old beam pipe replaced by new. New support to be assembled in R78. First target assembly & alignment in R78 on new support. Tests with first set of electronics in R78. Installation in ISIS 2nd week January. Tests on stepper motor and gate valve controls (DL). Installation of control electronics in MICE LCR. Test of full target system on ISIS beam pipe. 2nd system built up in R78. (Cooling still to be tested.) Work schedules (RPA) submitted for: Target removal Target installation – awaiting feedback. LASER safety questions still pending. Trying to get answers from RAL, for patch-panel design.
