Geographical location of the Belgorod and his climate
Belgorod region was founded in 1954 in the southwest of the Central Russia and belongs to the black-earth region. The region occupies a territory of 27,1 sq.km and divided into 21 districts. The total population of the region is about 1,5 million people The average temperature of January is -8°C, of July +20°C.

Chernozyom Typical chernozyom – black soils – comprise about one third of the land in the Region. These fertile soils are excellent for growing crops. The humus content ranged from 15% to 18% ideal for many agricultural crops. Farmland occupies 237,700 hectares

Belgorod's history Belgorod is one of Russia‘s oldest towns dating back to 1596.The first settlements of Slavs were established here approximately in the ΧΙ Century. In 1593 the fortress was built on the chalky mountain, that‘s why it was called “Whitetown”.

On June 22, 1941 the Great Patriotic War broke out
On June 22, 1941 the Great Patriotic War broke out. The fascist aggressors brought destruction, suffering, death and enslavement to our country. But all people rose up to liberate out land. Here in the summer of 1943 a great battle was fought. More than 4 million men, tanks, aircraft took part in the fighting which lasted 50 days and nights. The victory in the battle of Kursk Bulge was of great importance, in completed a turning point (after Stalingrad Battle) in the Great Patriotic War.

On August 5, 1943 Moscow fired a salute in honor of the liberation of Belgorod and Oryol for the first time during the war years. That’s why Belgorod is called “Town of the First Salute”.

Nickolay Vatutin He was born in 1901 in a village of Chepukhino in the family of a peasant. Nickolay studied very hard and received a scholarship. In 1920 he was mobilized to the Red Army. For the victory in the battle of Kursk N.F.Vatutin was awarded “The Orden Of Cutuzov Of The First Grade”.

On graduating the military school Vatutin was characterized in a following way:

The Kursk Bulge Diorama museum was open in Belgorod on August 3, 1987 in commemoration of a battle of Kursk Bulge. The canvas of the Diorama is 67 metres long and 15 metres and it has an area of 1005 sq. metres.

Industrial potential of the city
The Belgorod Vitamin Factory produced vitamins A,B,C, various pharmaceuticals. The Belgorod Mechanical Engineering Plant “RITM” produces engineering instruments, tools, pumps, press moulds. The Instrumental Engienering Plant produces washing and drying machines, vacuum cleaners, coffee makers. The Belgorod Asbestos an Cement Plant produces asbestos and cement sheeting, boards, pipes and couplings. The Citric Acid Plant produces citric acid. The Belgorod Clothing Factory produced ladies’ clothes and bed linen.

Education in Belgorod Belgorod has several higher educational centers and a network of 48 high schools and 8 specialized technical colleges and schools. Belgorod is the greatest university city of central Russia. More than of daytime students study here.
